Reality Bites Soundtrack

The Reality Bites soundtrack was the accompanying collection of mostly shit songs that provided a musical sound-scape to a mostly shit movie. You remember the one- Ben Stiller is a pussy, Winona Rider is a flaky slut, Janeane Garofalo is an even bigger slut, Ethan Hawke is a greasy douchebag, Steve Zhan makes you wonder how the fuck he even got casted...its painfully obvious now that the word "Reality" was included in the title for a reason. To paraphrase, slacker meets girl, girl meets go-getter, slut has Aids scare, gay friend wrestles with coming out, slacker humps and dumps, go-getter marginalizes and commercializes girl's art, blah, blah, blah. Its has its moments in a Dave Pirner cameo (he was banging Winona at the time, can you believe it?) and David Spade/Andy Dick appearances as well. I think there was this sort of novelty at the time that allowed these really trite caricatures to be manufactured, packaged and sold right back to the people they were meant to resemble. It became especially formulaic for romantic drama's with culturally relevant soundtracks a la "Singles" and such to start popping up. In retrospect, they're complete dreck and only exaggerate the whole "angsty-slacker-grunge-greasy hair-flannel-combat boot-coffee shop-jaded dickhole" mythos.....but I digress.

In Hollywood's great tradition of "only getting it half-right", this soundtrack was no exception. The record runs the gambit from "pretty alright" (Dinosaur Jr and New Order) to plain fucking awful (Big Mountain and Ethan Hawke's laughable performance). Yeah, Yeah, we all know Lisa Loeb's "Stay" and that insufferable "My Sharona" song, but folks, there's a special place in hell for a host of musical villainy that collectively called itself Big Mountain. For those of you that follow this blog (all three of you....I see your names when I sign in, you sad fucking creatures) I reserve an unprecedented amount of hatred and abhorrence for what is known as "dumb white guy reggae". Sublime and 311 are capital offenders, but it doesn't get any whiter or dumber than Big White Dumb Fucking Mountain. You know what, wasting the time to type three pages of analysis on why these drug-rug adorned dong-huffers were worse than the Nazis probably can't come close to the evidence exhibited in the video below. I know I went kinda off the rails here on this one, but take a look for yourself as these buffoons shit all over that bombaclot Peter Frampton. May Jah have mercy on your souls.

Tripping Daisy

I first saw this band on Conan O’Brien in ’93. I was ingesting massive quantities of LSD at the time, so the name was initially intriguing to me, but then again, so were carpet fibers.

Looking back, it was most likely an attempt to pander to the insufferable lot who would wear hats that belonged in Dr. Seuss books, Marvin the Martian t-shirts and were just a tad late to the “Grunge” party. . . Muck Sticky, basically. The song was interesting enough and the next day I sought out a copy of their album at the now long defunct skate shop, “The Vine”. I brought the CD to the counter and the guy ringing me up decided he’d give me an unsolicited account of his encounter with Tripping Daisy. It seems they were toting totally undeserved rock star attitudes, and how un-Pearl Jam-like they were, who apparently, despite their fame, were the nicest guys ever, and I should seriously take this into consideration before making this purchase, and blah blah blah. . . I didn’t care and bought what would be the last non-pop punk album I would buy for some years (think Pegboy, not New Found Glory or some other bullshit, dickhead). Anyway, the album was forgettable and I can’t really remember what it sounded like.

However, I do remember this awful fucking song that received mild commercial success. Well, enough to enable the bass player to buy gravy boats full drugs to kill himself with (in true rock star fashion, no less!) and a spot on Beavis and Butthead.

The lead singer for Tripping Daisy went on to form that wretched fucking pop/choir/Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat/tailor-made-for-car-commercial-ad-soundtracks band, The Polyphonic Spree. In hindsight, I probably should have listened to that guy at the skate shop. Nah, fuck that.

Alanis Morissette

Yesterday my roommate texted me the lyrics to Alanis' dreadfully un-clever ditty, "Ironic". Shortly after doing this, a bird took a shit on the back of his neck. I sincerely believe this was the universe's way of making him pay for getting that awful piece of shit stuck in my head, thus prompting this post. If you were a sentient being in the 90's, you remember Alanis and her "Jagged Little Pill" record. The appeal of this horse-faced chanteuse was always a bit of an anomaly to me. The whole "pseudo-grunge-looking-angsty-chick" routine seemed to wear thin once it was announced that all of that angst was drummed up by Dave fucking Coulier. Yep. Then there was the video for "Thank You" where she stood there naked with what we all know was a giant muskrat-bush betwixt her legs, blurred out for your consideration and mine. The greatest enigma here is how she managed to land Ryan Reynolds. Even Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett made more sense to me. Its so perplexing, that the only conclusion I can come to is that the dude must have a fetish for chicks who look like they work in the photo-lab at Costco. I'm gonna stop trying to make sense out of a nonsensical world and leave you with the following dreck.

They say all good things must come to an end. In some instances this is particularly evident. None more so than after the decline of the "Gilded Age of Commercially-Viable Yet Still Somewhat Artistically Integral" era that was the early to mid-90's. The latter portion of that decade was plagued by a vapid soullessness that permeated listener's ears and gave way to the rise of (to my great sorrow) the butt-rock dirges we now like to call "modern rock". We have FCC deregulation of radio station ownership to thank for this. As a result, media giants like Clear Channel were able to buy up 90% of the airwaves and push only a small fraction of whatever garbage they deemed fit down our throats. Is any band in particular to blame? Not exactly. The mediocrity that holds sway to this very moment was ushered in by the shifting from what was a promising coalesce of college-rock and pop music which unfortunately quickly devolved into the "Alterna-Bland" of the late 90's. This was propagated by a certain breed of dingleberry....sensitive men with sweaters, scraggly chin hair or soul-patches, butt-cuts, and a never-fail "play the feminist card to get laid" routine.

Speaking of idiots like those, here's Dishwalla. They fucking sucked.

After two and a half years of stagnation, we're bringing this bitch back. Its been a long 30 months or so, but fear not.....we'll be here to post for another couple of weeks before we decide to just keep on persisting with our miserable existences and let this blog once again fall into neglect for another couple of years. In the meantime, lets kick it off with some fruity-post-hardcore-come-art-phaggery. Shudder to Think were an early 90's emo-ish (think Rites of Spring and not Fall Out Boy, assholes) band on Dischord that got signed to a major label and went off the deep end with "Pony Express Record". Its amazing that album spawned as many singles as oddball as it is. Shit's pretty awesome, but i thought it to be pretty homo-erotic when I was a tween. The video for Hit Liquor doesn't help their case.

The guitar player was in Swiz and is now married to the chick in the Cardigan's which makes him my role-model and way cooler than any of you

"Mr. Jones" was fucking ubiquitous. Looking back, it's weird that bands like this managed to get so popular back in the day. I must admit that I still pull out "August And Everything After" from time to time and listen to certain tracks. The singer from this band has the worst case of white boy dread-locks of all time, but still managed to drill that chick from friends. Just goes to show that if you act like a big enough pussy girls will fuck you no matter what...even if you're the Hitler of hair-do's.

i jammed the shit out of this band back then. they had a corny white dude with braids and a guitar player named "noodles". yuck. i bought "smash" when it came out and yanked "ignite" from a friend, jamming both pretty consistently and then just putting it down and not really ever listening to either of them again. i dont think i voluntarily listened to the offspring past 1995. everyone else i knew was into this band too. looking back and hearing these songs, they're all pretty lame. i dont know why i dug it so much then. i'm sure this is the same as green day where someone can chime in on how this used to be a "legit" band. if you're that dude, you're a fucking dork. by the time that "americana" album came out, they were pretty much the worst band ever. the video progression is awesome, by the way. watch the evolution of "punk" in progress.

not really too familiar with aphex twin. on the other hand, i doubt too many readers here are either. these are the only two videos i remember getting airplay. the video for "windowlicker" is a crazy unedited directors cut. definitely worth checking out. one time i gave a chick at a bar a ride back to her apartment, and in exchange she decided to fellate me on her couch to the sweet backing of her aphex twin video dvd. as creepy as the video for "come to daddy" truly is, the bizzaro level shoots through the stratosphere when a strange girl simultaneously has her mouth on your junk. not recommended, yet neither discouraged...

i fucking love unsane. such a dirty, heavy, noisy band. they never got big or anything, despite the fact that this video was on ALL THE FUCKING TIME. for at least a couple months i couldn't watch mtv for a prolonged period of time without seeing the most painful display of goober-ass kids eating shit proper on the pavement. i was into skateboarding back then and loved every second of this video. considering the band never really got popular outside the underground, it goes to show that if a video was entertaining or ingenious enough, it could get heavy rotation.

i always remembered there being a cannibal corpse video on headbanger's ball for awhile, but i could never remember what it was. after some scouring i saw something familiar- "staring through the eyes of the dead". that being said, never been a fan. i always thought they were some sort of joke band, as i scoffed at their t-shirts in the "rockabilia" ads in the back of circus, hit parader, kerrang, metal maniacs, or any random guitar magazine i found on the bottom shelf of the periodicals rack while at the grocery store with my mom. the sad part is, this band was probably a "gateway" band for a lot of dudes who got into death metal. this song in particular is pretty bland and features the shite vocals of one chris barnes. for those of you unfamiliar, he continued his campaign of shitty sub-par metal with another band by the name of six feet under. kids who like this shit generally have long hair, oversized black t-shirts, black military pants, boots, subscribe to fangoria, refer to most things as "brutal", are overtly proficient with computers, wear those glasses with the bars across the top like kip dynamite, have little to no experience with the opposite sex, throw the "metal claw" up as a congratulatory gesture, smell bad, suck in general, etc., etc.

this video was fairly popular at the time. to be honest, i dont know shit else about this band, nor will i claim to. i remember the controversy among my peers regarding whether or not they were saying "humping" or "pumping" on your stereo. listening back, it definitely sounds like "humping". the video itself was mildly amusing. its one of those things where you say to yourself, "wow, this would probably be more enjoyable if i were on drugs". just so happens, i myself spent the second half of the decade high or in the pursuit of being so. a word of caution- if you make the decision to watch this video there's a high probability that you'll be singing the shit in your head for at least the next 72 hours. you've been warned.

I can't really get down with them like I used to, but for a long time RATM was one of my favorite bands. They've been playing shows again, so hopefully some new recordings will come out of that, since I liked everything up to and including "The Battle of Los Angeles."

Most people know that these guys ditched their singer, and then hired the singer from another one of my favorite 90's bands, Soundgarden. You would think that the collaboration would be wonderful, but as it turns out, it was mostly doo-doo.

i've had my ups and downs with type o negative. carnivore was always more my thing. when "black no.1" was in heavy rotation on the 'ball, i thought it was pretty goofy shit. i still liked the song, and giggled to myself when ever it or "christian woman" would come on. then "october rust" came out. i HATED october rust. its still my least favorite type o negative album to this day. it offended me so, that i refused pay the band any more attention what so ever. several years later i was in a serious long-term relationship with a girl who's favorite band happened to be type o negative. wouldnt you know it, but her favorite type o album was fucking october rust. that shit got played so much it drove me crazy and awakened all the animosity i had felt years before. i fucking hated this band. some time later i bought her "life is killing me" when it came out. my hatred had subsided, but now she was the one loathing them. i shelved this band until recently when my bass player hit a type o phase and jammed this shit for weeks at a time every time we left for tour. giving them a listen after a few years off and hearing their newer material was a breath of fresh air. me and type are in good standings as of now. looking back these videos are just as awesome/hilarious as i remember them. i still have to say i like carnivore better, though. sorry, chris.

Machine Head was one of the definitive bands of my youth. I remember watching the "Davidian" video on my Roadrunner Evolution video cassette. That shit has basically every component you could want to make a great video. Fire, footage of the band walking their dog, footage of the band playing live, footage of some black guy doing a feet first stage dive at a Machine Head show. think biohazard was my first real foray into the world of hardcore. of course, back then i couldnt really tell the difference between this and metal, i just knew that bands like these had way more tattoos and possessed a real affection for bandannas and basket-ball jerseys. i got a friend's brother to buy me "state of the world address" and jammed it pretty constantly. this was the same time period as machine head's "burn my eyes". when i heard an announcement for a tour involving biohazard/machine head/slayer i was obsessed with seeing the heroes of headbanger's ball live and in the flesh. when i tried to break the news to my folks of my aspirations they promptly told me to fucking forget it. these videos are all pretty hilarious looking back on it. the video for "5 blocks to the subway" was always kinda funny, because from what i can tell they were pretty much roaming around prospect heights and acting like it was the toughest place on earth. regardless, i still jam biohazard. "punishment" makes me want to commit genocide.

The videos for the songs off "Urban Discipline" are amazing in the fact that their artistry (in my opinion) actually exceeds the quality of the songs that they were made for. And I like the songs! "Punishment" is particularly great. Tons of cameos from NYHC all-stars. Other notes: Bobby Hambel is like a wild, caged animal. "Judgement Night" is the most ingenious combination of rock and hip hop that has ever (or will ever) be made.

Limp Bizkit

Any video tribute to the 90's wouldn't be complete without Limp Bizkit. Ok, Fred Durst is a douche, the guitar player wears a corset and cosmetic contact lenses, and the other two guys are dime-a-dozen, interchangeable rock rap dudes..."Rollin'" is still really fucking catchy. Plus the Durst man f'ed Britney, discovered Kenna, and starred in a video with Method Man (not to mention Pauly Shore). File under: Good Things Happening To Bad People. I think I'm going to go download all these songs and hide them on my ipod under Sepultura: Schizophrenia.

P.S. I'm not really sure if all these came out in the 90's.

"Seasons in the Abyss" is the video that got me into Slayer. It also got me into my favorite metal album of all time, "Seasons in the Abyss." No, "Reign In Blood" is not the best Slayer album, sorry. Anyway, Slayer really started to go downhill after SITA. Their last somewhat good record was probably "Divine Intervention." I watched this video for "Dittohead" frequently on Headbanger's Ball. It is a good track and an awesome clip, but I found out it is about Rush Limbaugh or something (in a good way). This is further evidence that, while they may have brought us some of the best tunes ever, Slayer is comprised of huge homos.

PS All you people out there that thought Slayer was "making a comeback" with that crap album they put out last year, FUCK YOU. That thing is a steaming pile of shit sewage. Stop wasting your time and just go play "War Ensemble" on repeat. -J.W.

This video is the shit. It was on the semi-famous "Evolution" Roadrunner Record videos sampler. It expresses how I feel about most things (I really don't care) while also reminding me that industrial pollution is pretty fucked up, even if you're in Obituary.

Actually, I'm not really sure what this video is trying to say. Is it that mankind doesn't care, and this apathy will lead to an apocalyptic future where children play in sewage? Is it that Obituary doesn't care about pollution? I can totally see John Tardy driving down some backwoods Florida road, listening to Leprosy on his truck's tape deck and throwing Budweiser cans out the window. Or is it that children just don't care about getting dirty? I'd consult the lyric sheet, but I think there are only four words used in this entire song. -J.W.

holy ambiguous sexuality, batman! morrissey is another one of those 90's staples that i felt was fruitier than richard simmons in a punch bowl at the time, but later became one of my favorites. i remember some of these videos getting casual play on 120 minutes, but i cant remember any of them seeing heavy rotation. they were probably enormous over in jolly ol' england. like depeche mode, i had some prior familiarity with the moz-father due to my sister's dingle-berry boyfriend. its funny to watch the progression of style from the earliest to the later videos. i remember wondering why these dudes with greaser cuts and neck tattoos were being led around by an obviously effeminate pied-piper. if you start with the video for "sing your life" you notice he 's totally rockabilly with a 2 and a half foot tall pomp, but by the time of "alma matters" his hair is way more constrained and he's dressing like james vanderbeek. maybe his power rests in his hair? maybe thats why those couple of 90's albums after "vauxhall and i" suck ass? those last two albums he released in 2003 and 2007 were pretty good, and wouldnt you know it....the hair got big again.

To some, it might be blasphemy, but I fucking hate Megadeth (outside from a few tracks). This band really started to go downhill with the "Youthanasia" album, or however the fuck you spell it. The title to that album was really clever. So was the riff in "Train of Consequences" that sounded exactly like a train. They played the video for "Train..." on Headbanger's Ball with an almost religious zeal, so I guess all the cleverness worked out well for these guys.

The bass player in my band went through a phase about a year ago when pretty much all he listened to was Megadeth. One time we were making a road trip and he put the entire Megadeth catalog on shuffle (even the newer albums). I remember simultaneously wanting to kill him, myself, Dave Mustaine, and the entire world. Anyway, fuck this band. Enjoy. -J.W.

The first time I ever heard this was on Beavis and Butthead. Everyone thought that show was cool, but all they were really doing was making fun of awesome shit. despite its obvious cheese-factor, i was pretty into this song. not really in a "get the record" sort of way, but more in a "oh cool, the mr. big video is on" way. i was always secretly suspicious of the lead singer's gender, and still question it to this day. the funny thing about mr. big was that it was like a laundry list of virtuoso musicians who hit it big with a corny ballad. on bass was billy sheehan who played in both steve vai and none other than "diamond" david lee roth's solo bands. on guitar was paul gilbert from racer x who was an 80's shred king. even after paul gilbert left, ritchie kotzen (another shred dude) stepped up to fill his spot. i know all this because im both a guitar and pop-culture nerd. now that i think about it, i should really check out some other mr. big material to see if its ballsier than this song....buuut i probably wont. enjoy.

when "dookie" by green day came out i was deeply enthralled in all things headbanger's ball. some how even i knew that something about them rang false. "but phillip, green day have been around since the 80's and really payed their dues, blah, blah, legit band, blah blah". whatever. im not gonna knock them for getting big. i will however knock them for opening the flood gates for the multitudes of shitty pop-punk that followed in their wake (sum-41, sr-71, and yes im gonna lump blink 182 into the pile of shitty bands with numeric monikers). jawbreaker never went diamond, and they were a billion times better without all the stupid hair, goofy neck-ties and ridiculous facial gestures. i remember when the sex pistols did their dumbass reunion in the mid-90's and john lydon would go on and on in every interview applauding green day for their success and what not. yeah, because what right did "mr. punk-rock" have to criticize them when he was responsible for the most hypocritical grab-for-cash of that time! most of my friends were apeshit over "dookie" and i probably heard all those songs waaay more than any human should. i would usually shrug off their enthusiasm and return fire with a track from "far beyond driven" or "superunknown". i definitely liked the next two green day albums better, but even that being said they always made boring ass videos.

No blog discussing the 90's would be complete without a hefty entry regarding korn. i'm not gonna lie, i thought this shit was pretty awesome back then. my brother bought the self-titled cd and we would listen to it in his bro'd out jeep wrangler. at the time that shit was the heaviest thing to ever happen to a set of rockford-fosgate subs. as time went on and the subsequent follow up albums were released, the whole schtick just got cornier (holy shit, i typed that and didnt even intend it as a shitty pun!) and stupider with other even stupider bands like limp bizkit competing for crown-douche status. i have to admit though, the video for "freak on a leash" was a definite watcher if not for todd mcfarlane's art, but for jonathan davis' retarded "omm-laa-laa-neema" bit. i tried to listen to the self-titled album with a friend of mine about a year ago and we couldnt get past "clown" without tears of hilarity streaming down our faces. do yourself a favor and try to relive this album that has NOT stood the test of time. its a real rib-tickler.

"Through and Through" is an amazing video. This was yet another clip found on the excellent "Evolution" VHS tape. When I was a teenager, I thought it was pretty much the coolest thing I've ever seen. I'm 28 now...I still think it's pretty much the coolest thing I've ever seen. Check out the beatdown shot, and also how LOA indicates their level of angst by showing a teenager walking down the street, literally brushing off the help/advice of his elder..."you could never understand how I feel!" This is masterful filmmaking. Also, I think someone is wearing a Warzone garment somewhere in there.

The clip for "This Time" isn't as good. This video was on Beavis and Butthead once. Great song.

Also included are a couple of videos from the "Soul Searching Sun" album. I would imagine that there are videos from Ugly, too, but I can't find them, so if anyone has any ideas, please leave a coment. -J.W.

I bought the cassingle for this song in '93 i believe. shit was catchy as fuck. a good friend of mine and i were discussing the other day the peculiar smell that accompanied the cassingle. for those of you who dont remember, the cassingle was generally a black cassette tape with the hit song of your choice on one side and a remix/live track/b-side on the other, all wrapped up in a decorative cardboard-esque slipcase....and they all smelled the same. i had tons of them. now the slipcase is where the funny smell actually originated. years later i was to learn that the smell was that of patchouli (it was one of those olfactory cognates i.e. a smell that reminds you of something from the past) whilst perusing a head shop with some friends. the really weird thing, is that it was the exact same smell from when you first busted He-Man out of his packaging or any other action figure of that era. im guessing it was the same cardboard material that they used to package both, but why patchouli? was it the same dude who ran the shift at the packaging plant or something? fucking bizarre.

good ol' aerosmith. these guys were fucking dinosaurs back then. me and jerry both had the special edition furry copy of get a grip. it was great album from my childhood and spawned a nice string of singles. eat the rich is an ass-kicker a la back in the saddle, while crazy, cryin', and amazing were an unholy triumvirate of ballads that were released with some sort of conceptual theme. basically, they were ripping off guns n' roses (or paying them back for all the aerosmith riffs they probably ripped off at one time or another). i havent really heard any of those songs since then, but i just realized how awful those ballads really were. at the time i was under the spell of alicia silverstone and was more willing to ignore the sappiness. by the way, if you'll notice in the video for cryin', the dude who steals her purse in the diner is none other than sawyer from lost. obviously, this was before he perfected the "long con" and having had his ass kicked by alicia silverstone i can see why he's not in any hurry to leave the island. livin' on the edge starred eddie furlong, hot off the success of T2. i remember wondering how steven tyler was able to so well conceal his package with just one hand. lastly, is the goddamned song from that shitty bruckheimer movie. you know the one. it sucks.

Soul Asylum were a moderately successful 90's alternative band. Their record featured a cover with bare butts on it. Not sure what that was all about, but it sure was tough to sneak it past my mom. They put out a bunch of other records that no one gives a shit about. "Runaway Train" is pretty pussy, but you'll be singing along and tapping your foot in no time. "Somebody to Shove" is a lot better. Killer guitar lead and a slammin' chorus.

Soul Asylum is also notable for the fact that their singer railed Winona Ryder, even though he looks like he did a faceplant on an I.E.D. The dude is uglier than my butthole with a wig on...good for him. -J.W.

A lot of people say that Appetite for Destruction is the best thing Guns and Roses ever did. These people are probably correct. However, you are truly doing yourself a disservice if you dismiss the two-headed hydra of Use Your Illusion (Volumes 1 and 2). Indulgent, decadent, completely ridiculous and over the top...of these components, great rock and roll is constructed. Plus there were at least 40 videos that were made from songs on these two albums...how bad could it really be?
